Basic fault codes dishwasher Whirlpool

Dishwashers manufactured by the U.S.-based multinational brand Whirlpool are well-known for their reliability and efficiency. Even the basic models that do not boast innovative features provide a choice of washing programs. There are compact and full-size models with different designs, capacity, and control panel.

FAULTSCAUSESOLUTION
F1NTC break
Temperature out of the normal value (-3°C till +85°C)
1. Temperature inside higher than +85°C
2. NTC defective (the NTC is the most common cause of this error and can be obtained from this link)
3. Dishwasher is frozen, less than -3°C
If the temperature is less than -3°C, fill the appliance with a cup of warm water to warm it up before you start it.
F2Water Leakage
Water is in the bottom tray
Floater or float switch switches off the water valve and the electronic switches on the drain pump until pressure sensor reports that it is empty. There are numerous causes for this fault, but it all usually comes down to the fact that something, somewhere is leaking. To cure this you need to find the leak.
F3Dishwasher Heating System Defective
Indicated after approximately 25 minutes of failure to reach operating temperature.
1. Heats too slowly (less than 1,5 °C in 10 min)
2. Water heater or heating element is defective (this is the most common cause of this issue and the heating element is available from this link)
3. Relays (RE2) on control board (CB) is defective
4. NTC - resistance fluctuation (the NTC or thermostat sensor, as noted above, can be found from this link)
Check the heating element first if you get this error.
F4Dishwasher Draining Failure
Drain pump starts and after 4 min the machine detects that it is “not empty”
1. Drain pump defective
2. Siphon closed
3. Control board defective (very rare!)
4. OWl/WI defective (Optical sensors, if fitted, but most don't have them)
The most common cause of this is either a blocked or defective drain pump. On that front you have two choices, you can either go with the genuine dishwasher drain pump from this link or, you can opt for a much, much cheaper compatible drain pump from this link.
F6Water Tap Closed
Water valve is switched on but flow meter sends no impulses and the water indicator is off
1. Water inlet tap closed
2. Water inlet hose blocked
3. Water inlet valve defective (common enough issue but also check the flow meter in the side chamber, the water valve is here if required)
4. Flow meter detective
It is a very common issue with these dishwashers and the common flow meter is built into the side chamber which can be accessed by removing the right hand side panel (looking from the front of the dishwasher) and the commonly used spare part can be found from this link
F7Flow Meter Failure
Water inlet valve is switched on and the water indicator is on.
1. Flow meter sends too few impulses (less than 10 imp. in 10 sec.)
2. Water tap closed during water inlet
3. Water inlet hose blocked
4. Water inlet valve defective
5. Flow meter defective
F8Water Level Failure
Failures are supervised over the whole program. Mechanical water indicator WI Spray pump works, the WI switches more than 20 times in 2 minutes back
Optical Water Indicator
Always after the OWI - signal is missing the electrical components are turned off for 5 sec. If after the 5 sec. the OWl-Signal is still not present then it notes a failure F8. If, however, after the 5 sec the OWl-Signal is present, then the water-level is filled to 6 Ltr. and the electrical components are again turned on. After the OWl signal is missing for a second time note an F8 failure.
1. Water inlet defect? Should switch on after approximately a 1 litre intake of water
2. Filter blocked
3. Water foaming giving false reading
4. Pot has turned off and is filled with spray water
5. No stable spray pump working, main wash motor faulty
F9Continuous Water Inlet
Water inlet valve is switched off, water indicator on, flow meter sends impulses (more than 10 imp. in 10 sec.)
1. Water inlet valve mechanically not closed
2. Triac on the control board permanently switched on. (short circuit)
Reaction: interval 30 sec. drain pump on / 20 sec. drain pump off in interval
The main control boards are model specific, if you want to buy one please contact us with the model number and the 12NC number from the rating plate just inside the door of the dishwasher to ensure that you get the correct one.

Whirlpool Generic dishwasher fault codes

Although dishwashers produced by the Fortune 500 corporation Whirlpool vary a lot, most of them have the same system of fault codes. A generic Whirlpool dishwasher utilizes flash lights to display an error code. To decipher the code, you need to count the number of flashes and find the corresponding information in the chart below.

FAULTSCAUSE
F11 Flash
NTC or thermistor open circuit
F22 Flashes
Water leak detected
F33 Flashes
Heating system defective
F44 Flashes
Failure to drain out
F55 Flashes
Rotor or spray arm blocked
F66 Flashes
No incoming water
F77 Flashes
Flow meter failure
F88 Flashes
Water level fault
F99 Flashes
Continuous water inlet
F010 Flashes
Sensor failure, only displayed in test program
FA11 Flashes
Optical water indicator (Turbidity Sensor)
FB12 Flashes
Motorised diverter valve
FC13 Flashes
Water hardness sensor failure

Whirlpool VBL dishwasher fault codes

The Whirlpool dishwashers belonging to the VBL range vary in many respects, from capacity to design, and feature sets. What they have in common is the way the error codes are displayed in case of a minor or a major issue. The VBL models use either the “Start” LED or a sequence of light flashes repeated after a pause.

FAULTSCAUSESOLUTION
F010 Flashes
Only use in test program, indicates sensor failure
This fault code should never be visible.
F11 Flash
NTC or thermistor open circuit
Usually it is exactly what it says and the NTC has failed.
F22 Flashes
Water leak detected
This will be a float switch in the base normally that has been activated due to a leak of some sort.
F33 Flashes
Heating system defective
Nine out of ten times this will be a faulty heater.
F44 Flashes
Failure to drain out
Drain pump blocked or faulty is usually the cause of this fault code being displayed.
F66 Flashes
No incoming water
Check the water is on and the supply is okay and then the water valve.
F77 Flashes
Flow meter failure
This is the small flow meter fitted to the fill matrix of the dishwasher.
F88 Flashes
Water level fault
F99 Flashes
Continuous water inlet
