In the end of the XXth century, the series of Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwashers was awarded the honorary title “America’s best dishwashing system”. It happened, inter alia, even because of the fact that a Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwasher troubleshooting system exists. This system, as well as Kenmore Elite dishwasher troubleshooting, allows to quickly find a correct approach in removal of a breakdown, which is highly more important for customers. See the complete detail below.

PROBLEMPOSSIBLE CAUSE/SOLUTION
Dishwasher does not run or stops during a cycleIs the door closed tightly and latched?
Is the right cycle selected?
Is there power to the dishwasher? Has a household fuse blown, or has a circuit breaker tripped? Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker. If the problem continues, call an electrician.
Has the motor stopped due to an overload? The motor automatically resets itself within a few minutes. If it does not restart, call for service.
Is the water shutoff valve (if installed) turned on?
It is normal for certain cycles to repeatedly pause for several seconds during the wash cycle.
START/RESUME light is flashingWas the door opened during the cycle, or was the power interrupted? The Start/Resume light will flash when the door is opened during a cycle, or may flash if the power is interrupted. Press START/RESUME to resume the cycle. Make sure the door is fully closed and latched.
The Clean light is flashingThe dishwasher has malfunctioned. Call for service.
Dishwasher will not fillIs the overfill protection float able to move up and down freely? Press down to release.
Dishwasher seems to run too longIs the water supplied to the dishwasher hot enough? The dishwasher runs longer while heating water.
A delay automatically occurs in some wash and rinse cycles until the water reaches the proper temperature.
Water remains in the dishwasherIs the cycle complete?
Was the disposer knockout plug removed during installation?
Detergent remains in the covered section of the dispenserIs the cycle complete?
Is the detergent lump-free? Replace detergent if necessary.
Is the bottom rack installed properly with the bumpers (on some models) in the front? Reinstall the rack if necessary.
White residue on the front of the access panelWas too much detergent used?
Is the brand of detergent making excess foam? Try a different brand to reduce foaming and eliminate buildup.
Odor in the dishwasherAre dishes washed only every 2 or 3 days? Run a rinse cycle once or twice a day until you have a full load.
Does the dishwasher have a new plastic smell? Run a vinegar rinse as described in “Spotting and filming on dishes” later in this Troubleshooting guide.
Condensation on the kitchen counter (built-in models)Is the dishwasher aligned with the countertop? Moisture from the vent in the dishwasher console can form on the counter.

Food soil left on the dishesIs the dishwasher loaded correctly?
Is the water temperature too low? For best dishwashing results, water should be 120°F (49°C) as it enters the dishwasher.
Did you use the correct amount of fresh detergent? Use recommended dishwasher detergents only. Detergent must be fresh to be effective. Store detergent in a cool, dry area. Heavy soil and/ or hard water generally require extra detergent.
Do you have hard water? You may need to increase the amount of detergent you are using. Also, you may need to switch to a detergent with a phosphorus content of 8.7%.
Is detergent caked in dispenser? Use fresh detergent only. Do not allow detergent to sit for several hours in a wet dispenser. Clean dispenser when caked detergent is present. Is the pump or spray arm clogged by labels from bottles and cans?
Is the home water pressure high enough for proper dishwasher filling? Home water pressure should be 20 to 120 psi (138 to 828 kPa) for proper dishwasher fill. If you have questions about your water pressure, call a licensed, qualified plumber.
Are high suds slowing the wash arm? Do not use soap or laundry detergents. Use recommended dishwasher detergents only.
Spotting and filming on dishesIs your water hard or is there a high mineral content in your water? Conditioning the final rinse water with a liquid rinse aid helps eliminate spotting and filming. Keep the rinse aid dispenser filled.
Is the water temperature too low? For best dishwashing results, water should be 120°F (49°C) as it enters the dishwasher.
Did you use the correct amount of effective detergent? Use recommended dishwasher detergents only. Detergent must be fresh to be effective. Store detergent in a cool, dry area. Heavy soil and/or hard water generally require extra detergent. Is the home water pressure high enough for proper dishwasher filling? Home water pressure should be 20 to 120 psi (138 to 828 kPa) for proper dishwasher fill. If you have questions about your water pressure, call a licensed, qualified plumber.
NOTE: To remove spots and film from dishes, try a white vinegar rinse. This procedure is intended for occasional use only. Vinegar is an acid, and using it too often could damage your dishwasher.
1. Wash and rinse dishes. Use an air-dry or an energy saving dry option. Remove all silverware or metal items.
2. Put 2 cups (500 mL) white vinegar in a glass or dishwasher-safe measuring cup on the bottom rack.
3. Run the dishwasher through a complete washing cycle using an air-dry option. Do not use detergent. Vinegar will mix with the wash water.
Silica film or etching (silica film is a milky, rainbow-colored deposit; etching is a cloudy film)Sometimes there is a water/chemical reaction with certain types of glassware. This is usually caused by some combination of soft or softened water, alkaline washing solutions, insufficient rinsing, overloading the dishwasher, and the heat of drying. It might not be possible to avoid the problem, except by hand washing.
To slow this process use a minimum amount of detergent per load. Use a liquid rinse aid and underload the dishwasher to allow thorough rinsing. Silica film and etching are permanent and cannot be removed. Do not use heated drying.
White spots on cookware with nonstick finishHas the dishwasher detergent removed cookware seasoning? Reseason cookware after washing in the dishwasher.
Brown stains on dishes and dishwasher interiorDoes your water have high iron content? Rewash dishes using 1-3 tsp (5-15 mL) of citric acid crystals added to the covered section of the detergent dispenser. Do not use detergent. Follow with a normal wash cycle with detergent. If treatment is needed more often than every other month, the installation of an iron removal unit is recommended.
Black or gray marks on dishesAre aluminum items rubbing dishes during washing?
Disposable aluminum items can break down in the dishwasher and cause marking. Hand wash these items. Remove aluminum markings by using a mild abrasive cleaner.
Orange stains on plastic dishes or dishwasher interiorAre large amounts of tomato-based foods on dishes placed in the dishwasher? Stains gradually fade over time. Regular use of heated drying will slow fading. Stains will not affect dishwasher performance. Regular use of a rinse cycle and an air-dry or energy-saving dry option will reduce the likelihood of staining.
Dishes are not dryDid you load your dishwasher to allow proper water drainage? Do not overload.
Use a liquid rinse aid to speed drying.
Are the plastics wet? Plastics often need towel drying. Is the rinse aid dispenser empty? Did you use an air-dry or energy-saving dry option? Use a heated drying option for drier dishes.
- Try adding the “Hi-Temp Wash” or “Sani Rinse” option for further improved drying performance.
- Use a more aggressive cycle, such as Pots and Pans or Heavy cycle for improved drying performance.
Silverware is not dryDid you load your silverware to allow proper water drainage?
Are the silverware basket lids being used? For best drying use the slots in the lids to separate and space the silverware.
Are utensils and/or silverware touching? Avoid items from touching or nesting onto each other by mixing silverware types. Do not overload the basket.
Chipping of dishesDid you load the dishwasher properly? Load the dishes and glasses so they are stable and do not strike together from washing action. Minimize chipping by moving the rack in and out slowly.
NOTE: Antiques, feather-edged crystal, and similar types of china and glassware might be too delicate for automatic dishwashing. Wash by hand.
Grinding, grating, crunching or buzzing soundsA hard object has entered the wash module (on some models). When the object is ground up, the sound should stop. If the noise persists after a complete cycle, call for service.
Dishwasher exterior is dirty or marked
Marks, smudges or residue on dishwasher exteriorDid you clean the dishwasher with a mild detergent and cloth or use a stainless steel cleaner on models with a stainless steel exterior? In most cases, regular use of a soft, damp cloth or sponge and a mild detergent is all that is necessary to keep the outside of your dishwasher looking fresh and clean. If your dishwasher has a stainless steel exterior, a stainless steel cleaner is recommended.

2. Make sure that a portion of the Drain Hose is at least 20” from the floor.
3. If your Drain Hose is attached to the Food Disposer make sure the plug in the Food Disposer was removed.
4. Clean the air gap periodically to ensure proper drainage of the dishwasher. With most types, you lift off the chrome cover. Unscrew the plastic cap. then check for any soil buildup. Clean if necessary.
5. In this case, a certified plumber would need to check.
Etching (permanent cloudiness) “Sudsing”1. Type of glass - some glassware is sensitive to temperature
2. Too much detergent
3. Too much detergent and/or wrong type of detergent and/or wrong brand of detergent.
1. Make sure that glasses are Dishwasher safe. Select a cycle that does not get as hot. Do not use the Heated Dry option.
2. The amount of detergent is based on the hardness of the water deliveried to your dishwasher and the amount of food soil present. If you pre-rinse your dishes and/ or have soft water you should reduce the amount of detergent.
3. Reduce or change the type/brand of detergent you are using. Note: Do not pre-rinse dishes. Scraping excess food soils is all that is required.

Kenmore ELITE Ultra Wash dishwasher troubleshooting

Kenmore ELITE Ultra Wash dishwashers boast very high energy efficiency, intuitive controls, and quiet operation. They are equipped with a silverware basket accommodating large and small items, but otherwise rack system is just basic. If you discover an ELITE Ultra Wash dishwasher is having an issue, check out the table below for diagnostic advice.

PROBLEMSOLUTION
DISHWASHER DOES
NOT RUN
NOTE: It is normal for the dishwasher to repeatedly pause several times during a cycle. If the Start/Resume or Smart Display status bar light is blinking, push START/RESUME and close the door within 3 seconds. Be sure the door is closed and latched. Be sure you have selected a cycle. Be sure there is power to the dishwasher. A circuit breaker or fuse may have tripped. If lights other than Start/Resume blink and the unit will not run, you will need to call for service.
DETERGENT REMAINS IN THE DISPENSER OR TABLET IS ON BOTTOM OFTUBCheck for dishware such as cookie sheets, cutting boards, or large containers, etc. that may be blocking the detergent dispenser from opening properly. Be sure your detergent is fresh and lump free. Be sure the cycle has completed. (Smart Display will show the word “COMPLETED.”) If it has not completed, you will need to resume the cycle by pressing START/RESUME and closing the door within 3 seconds.
CYCLE RUNS TOO LONGNOTES:
- To use less water and reduce energy consumption you will encounter cycles that typically run for up to 3 hours.
- A water heater setting of 120°F (49°C) is best, the dishwasher will delay longer while heating cooler water.
- Some options will add time to the cycle. The Heated Dry option adds V2 hour. Try the 1 Hour Wash cycle. Run the hot water at a faucet close to the dishwasher before starting the cycle.
DISHWASHER NOT DRYINGNOTE: Plastic and items with nonstick surfaces are difficult to dry because they have a porous surface which tends to collect water droplets. Towel drying may be necessary. Use of rinse aid along with the Heated Dry option is needed for proper drying. Proper loading of items can affect drying.
Glasses and cups with concave bottoms hold water. This water may spill onto other items when unloading.
- Unload the bottom rack first.
- Load these items on the more slanted side of the rack for improved results.
WILL NOT FILLBe sure the water is turned on to the dishwasher.
Check that the float is free from obstructions. Check for suds in the dishwasher. If foam or suds are detected, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water.
WATER REMAINS IN THE TUB/WILL NOT DRAINBe sure the cycle has completed. (Smart Display will show the word “COMPLETED.”) If it has not, you will need to resume the cycle by pressing START/RESUME and closing the door within 3 seconds.
If dishwasher is connected to a food waste disposer, be sure the knockout plug has been removed from the disposer inlet.
Check for kinks in the drain hose.
Check for food obstructions in the drain or disposer.
Check your house fuse or circuit breaker.
HARD WATER (WHITE RESIDUE ON DISHWASHER INTERIOR OR GLASSWARE)NOTE: Extremely hard water mineral deposits can cause damage to your dishwasher and make it difficult to achieve good cleaning. You may bring water samples to Sears to check your water hardness level. A water softener is strongly recommended if your hardness is 15 grains or more. If a water softener is not installed, the following steps may help:
Use a commercial cleaner designed for dishwashers once per month.
Clean the ULTRA WASH*% filters at least once per month.
Always use a rinse aid.
Always use a high-quality, fresh detergent.
Use a detergent booster/water softener additive designed for dishwashers.
ODORSNOTE: If the dishwasher is not used daily, you can run a Quick Rinse cycle with the partial load daily until a full load is ready to run, or use the Top Rack Only option (on some models) for partial loads.
Run a vinegar rinse through the dishwasher by putting 2 cups (500 mL) of white vinegar in an upright glass measuring cup in the lower rack. Run a normal cycle with the Heated Dry option turned off. Do not use detergent.
NOISYNOTES:
- Surging sounds can occur periodically throughout the cycle while the dishwasher is draining.
- Normal water valve hissing may be heard periodically.
- A normal snap sound may be heard when the detergent dispenser opens during the cycle and when the door is opened at the end of the cycle.
- Improper installation will affect noise levels.
Be sure the filters are properly installed. A thumping sound may be heard if items extend beyond the racks and interfere with the wash arms. Readjust the dishware and resume the cycle.
FOOD SOILS REMAIN ON DISHESBe sure the dishwasher is loaded correctly. Improper loading can greatly decrease the washing performance Check filter to ensure it is properly installed. Clean it if needed. Select the proper cycle and option for the type of soils. The Pots Pans cycle with the TURBOZONE™ option can be used for tougher loads. Be sure the incoming water temperature is at least 120°F (49°C). Use the proper amount of fresh detergent. More detergent is needed for heavier-soiled loads and hard water conditions. Scrape food from dishes prior to loading (do not prerinse).
DID NOT SANITIZEIf the words “NOT SANITIZED” are shown on the Smart Display, the load is NOT sanitized. The cycle was interrupted in the final rinse, or your water heater is set too low. Set your water heater to 120°F (49°C).
DAMAGE TO DISHWAREImproper loading can cause dishes to become chipped or damaged.
BLINKING LIGHTSIf the Start/Resume light and Smart Display status bar are blinking, push START/ RESUME and close the door within 3 seconds. If the word “COMPLETED” on the Smart Display or any other lights are blinking and the dishwasher will not run, check the following:
- Is the overfill protection float able to move up and down freely? Press down to release.
- Be sure the water supply is turned on to the dishwasher. (This is very important following the new installation of your dishwasher.)
- Check for suds in the dishwasher. If foam or suds are detected by the dishwasher sensing system, the dishwasher may not operate properly or may not fill with water.
Suds can come from:
- Using the incorrect type of detergent, such as dish detergent for hand washing dishes, laundry detergent, or hand soap.
- Not replacing the rinse aid dispenser cap after filling (or refilling) the rinse aid.
- Using an excessive amount of dishwasher detergent. Call for service.
CLOUDY OR SPOTTED DISHWARE (AND HARD WATER SOLUTION)NOTES:
- Liquid rinse aid is necessary for drying and to reduce spotting.
- Use the correct amount of detergent. Confirm that the cloudiness is removable by soaking the item in white vinegar for 5 minutes. If the cloudiness disappears, it is due to hard water. Adjust the amount of detergent and rinse aid. If it does not come clear, it is due to etching. Be sure the incoming water temperature is set at 120°F (49°C). Try using the Hi Temp and Sani Rinse options. To remove spotting, run a vinegar rinse through the dishwasher.
- Wash and rinse the affected dishware and load into dishwasher. Remove all silverware and metal items. Put 2 cups (5oo mL) of white vinegar in a glass measuring cup in the lower rack. Run a normal cycle with the Heated Dry option turned off. No detergent is needed.
ETCHING (PERMANENT CLOUDINESS)This is an erosion of the surface of the glassware and can be caused by a combination of: water that is too hot, from using too much detergent with soft water or by pre- washing. Detergent needs food soil to act upon. If etching has occurred, the glassware is permanently damaged. To avoid further etching, adjust the detergent amount to match the water hardness, stop pre-washing, and use water heating options only when incoming water temperature is below 120°F (49°C).
LEAKING WATERBe sure the dishwasher has been installed properly and is level. Suds can cause the dishwasher to overflow. Measure the detergent accurately and use only detergents designed for use in a dishwasher. Less detergent is needed in soft water. Try another brand of detergent if sudsing continues. To avoid rinse aid leaking from the dispenser, be sure the lid is securely attached and avoid overfilling.
TUB IS DISCOLOREDNOTES:
- High iron content in the water can discolor the tub.
- Tomato-based foods can discolor the tub or dishware. A citrus-based cleaner can be used to clean.

Kenmore Sears dishwasher troubleshooting

The Kenmore brand name belongs to the Sears Holdings Corporation, so you can see a lot of Kenmore household appliances sold in stores owned by Sears. Whatever differences they may have in design and features, they are prone to the same common issues, which you can resolve with the help of the table below.

PROBLEMCAUSED BYSOLUTION
Dishwasher will not start•Dishwasher not receiving electricity•Check house fuse or circuit breaker.
•Dial not in correct position for cycle selected•Make sure Dial is turned far enough and cycle button is fully pushed in.
•Turning the Dial too far•Turn Dial to START Be careful you do not turn the Dial any farther than necessary.
There is a delay between start-up and water fill so you will not hear any wash action right away
Dishwasher will not fill with water•Turning the Dial too far
•No water supply•Make sure water supply valve under sink is turned on.
•Water inlet valve clogged•Water valve supply line may be clogged with sediment. Clean out.
Unusual noise•Improper loading•Utensils may not be secure on rack pins,or something small may have dropped from the rack. Water is causing utensils to rattle. Make sure everything is securely placed in dishwasher.
Dishwasher leaks•Dishwasher not level•Level dishwasher as described in Installation Instructions. Don't place dishwasher on carpet.
•Too much sudsing•Improper detergent. Use automatic dishwasher detergent only or try a different brand or less detergent.
•Spilled rinse agent•If hand dishwashing detergent is used by mistake, pour one measuring cup of vegetable oil in bottom of tub and run dishwasher through a complete NORMAL WASH cycle with recommended amount of automatic dishwashing detergent.
•Dishwasher door interferes with surrounding cabinets•To remove suds from tub: Open dishwasher. Let suds evaporate. Add 1 gallon of cold water to tub. Close and latch dishwasher. Pump out water by slowly turning Dial until a drain period is reached. Repeat if necessary.
•Spilled rinse agent can cause foam during washing. This can lead to overflowing. Wipe up accidental spill of rinse agent with a damp cloth.
•Make sure door does not touch cabinets when opening or closing. Use levelling legs to level dishwasher. —
Dishes not dry•Water is not hot•Raise water heater thermostat to 140°F if necessary.
•HEATED DRY OFF option selected•Do not select HEATED DRY OFF option. Allow dishes to dry in heated air.
•Improper loading•Load dishes so items drain properly. Avoid overloading.
•Rinse agent dispenser empty• Fill rinse agent dispenser if empty.
Spotting and filming•Hard water•Fill detergent cups to capacity. Use dishwasher detergent with highest available phosphorous content. May be necessary to install a water softener.
•Water is not hot•Raise water heater thermostat to 140°F.

•Not enough or poor quality detergent•Use more fresh automatic dishwasher detergent. Use detergent with highest available phosphorous content, especially if you have hard water.
•Old detergent• Use only fresh, automatic dishwasher detergent. Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place. Discard old, lumpy or separated detergent. Do not fill detergent dispenser until ready to wash.
•No rinse agent•Fill rinse agent dispenser.
To remove stubborn spots and film from glassware:
1.Remove all metal utensils from the dishwasher.
2.Do not add detergent.
3.Select POTS PANS cycle.
4.Start the dishwasher and allow to run for 18 to 20 minutes. The dishwasher will now be in the main wash.
5.Then open the door and pour 2 cups(500 ml) white vinegar into bottom of dishwasher.
6.Close the door and allow to complete the cycle.
If vinegar rinse doesn’t work: Repeat as above, except use 1/4 cup (60 ml) of citric acid crystals instead of vinegar. (Most drugstores carry citric acid crystals.)

Etching—permanent filming which cannot be removed•Too much detergent in soft water•Reduce amount of dishwasher detergent. Use detergent with lower phosphorous content,
•Improper loading•Make sure dishes and glassware are loaded properly to permit water spray to rinse all surfaces. Do not overload.
Water left in bottom of tub•Normal amount of water•It is normal for a small amount of clean water to remain in bottom of tub after each cycle.
•Clean the drain air gap.
Dishes and interior of dishwasher brown or yellow•Iron or manganese in water•Install an iron or manganese filter in home water supply.
Film build-up on lower front of tub•Some detergent did not dissolve•Use fresh, automatic dishwasher detergent. Use detergent with highest available phosphorous content, especially if you have hard water. Raise water heater thermostat to 140°F if necessary Run v/ater at sink until hot before starting dishwasher. Remove film with dishwashing detergent and warm water.
Silverware stained•Undissolved detergent contacting wet silverware•Avoid spilling dry detergent on wet silverware. Clean with silver polish.
•Acidic or salty food soils•Use RINSE & HOLD cycle Certain foods left on silverware for extended periods of time may cause pitting.
Bronze tarnish on silver plate•Silver plate worn off exposing base metal-—takes on bronze hue•Remove tarnish with silver polish.
Black or gray marks on dish• Metal utensils rubbing against dishes during wash•Load metal utensils so they do not rub against dishes. Marks may be removed with mild abrasive cleanser and plastic scouring pad.
Dishware chipped or broken•Improper loading•Do not overload. Load glasses in upper rack only
Dishwasher odor•Soiled dishes held too long in dishwasher•Use RINSE & HOLD cycle if dishes will not be washed at end of day.
•Vinyl rack coating•Plastic odor will be gone after several weeks use.
Motor hums•Dishwasher has not been used on a regular basis•If you do not use your dishwasher often, set it to fill and pump out once every week.
•This will help keep the seal moist and the garbage disposer clear.
Staining of tub interior•Some detergents contain colorant (pigment or dyes)•This will discolor the tub interior with extended use. Check the detergent dispenser for signs of any discoloration. If dispenser is discolored, change to detergent without any colorant
•Some tomato-based foods can stain•Using the RINSE & HOLD cycle after adding dish to the load can decrease the level of staining.
Vapor at the vent•Water vapor comes through the vent by the door latch during drying and when water is being pumped out•This is a normal occurrence.
Detergent cup lid won’t latch after adding detergent•Dial not in OFF position•Dial must be in OFF position for cup lid to close and latch properly. If you unlatch the door and open it to dry your dishes, the Dial does not advance to OFF by itself.
